Airbags in Motorcycle Suits: What to Check Before Ordering
You have chosen your airbag vest. Now you need a leather suit to wear with it. Before choosing a size or sending your measurements, there is one detail your suit maker needs: the exact airbag model.
Some airbags are worn beneath motorcycle clothing. Others sit over it or are designed for a particular approved garment. The right arrangement depends on the system, its intended use and its manufacturer’s instructions.
Being able to zip your suit over an uninflated vest does not establish that it has enough room for deployment.
Can you wear an airbag under a leather race suit?
For some systems, yes—provided the combination meets the manufacturer’s compatibility requirements.
Alpinestars explains that certain Tech-Air systems can be used with suitable motorcycle outerwear from other manufacturers when there is sufficient space for expansion. It also recommends stretch panels in leather garments. The specific model’s user manual explains how to check compatibility. Alpinestars compatibility guidance.
Requirements differ between systems. Dainese, for example, states that Smart Air is unsuitable for full leather suits and track use. Choosing a larger suit does not remove those restrictions. Dainese airbag FAQ.
If you are buying equipment for track days, check the airbag’s intended use as well as its fit. Share the exact model with your suit maker.
Why simply buying a larger suit can cause problems
A larger size changes several parts of a suit together. Your vest may need more space around your upper body, but sizing up can also change sleeve length and armor placement.
Dainese’s fitting guidance specifically cautions against choosing a larger jacket as the sole solution for an airbag worn underneath. Dainese fitting guidance.
With a custom suit, the pattern can be planned around your measurements and the requirements of your particular system. That discussion should cover expansion space, stretch-panel placement and the manufacturer’s compatibility instructions.
There is no single clearance measurement that should be assumed to work for every airbag.
How LeathersFirst prepares your suit
At LeathersFirst, airbag tailoring starts before the leather is cut.
Our factory reviews the exact airbag model you intend to wear. Our pattern master then adjusts the suit pattern to account for the vest and its inflation requirements.
We add extra stretch panels to accommodate expansion and use reinforced stitching in our airbag-tailored suits. These construction details provide additional flexibility and strength while accounting for the rider’s measurements.
The proposed suit-and-airbag combination must still meet the airbag manufacturer’s requirements. Some systems require an approved garment. Helite’s Race Suit manual, for example, specifies compatible suits for that particular system. Helite Race Suit manual.
This is why we ask about your airbag at the beginning of the order.
What to send before production
To help us review your setup, send:
- The brand and exact model. Include the version if known. A clear photograph of the model label can help.
- Your vest size. Tell us which size you actually intend to wear.
- Your intended use. Let us know whether you ride on the road or track.
- Your suit choice. Share the design and whether you want a one-piece or two-piece suit.
- Your measurements. Follow our made-to-measure guide and tell us about the airbag before submitting them.
You do not need to work through the measurements alone. Our team can help over WhatsApp or a video call, explain the measuring process and answer questions before production begins.
See your finished suit before dispatch
We send real photographs of your finished suit for approval before shipping. You can check its design, colours and visible details against your order.
Photographs help you review the finished product, but they cannot establish how an airbag will deploy inside it. When your suit arrives, follow the airbag manufacturer’s fitting and compatibility checks. Contact its authorised support if anything is unclear.
Common questions
Is the airbag included with the suit?
No. LeathersFirst offers suit fit customisation for a reviewed airbag model. The airbag system is purchased separately.
Can any airbag be used with a custom race suit?
The exact model needs to be reviewed first. Some systems allow suitable garments from other manufacturers; others have restrictions on garments or riding use. Custom tailoring does not remove those requirements.
Are stretch panels enough to establish compatibility?
Stretch panels are one part of the suit’s construction. Compatibility depends on the particular airbag and the complete garment arrangement. Follow the model’s instructions rather than judging suitability from a product photograph alone.
What if I have not chosen my airbag yet?
Contact us before production. Selecting the model first allows its requirements to be considered when your suit pattern is prepared.
If you already own a suit and want to add an airbag, discuss the combination before using it.
Planning your next custom suit?
Send us your airbag model and the suit you have in mind. Our team will review the requirements and explain the next step.
